I started freelancing at the Gap yesterday. I am doing CAD design for kids/toddler sleepwear and underwear. It really has been a blast so far. Some challenges, but I am getting paid to draw all day, which is wonderful! I can't show what I have been doing, but these links are examples of how my textile drawings would be applied to underwear and pjs.

THE mega post
Today was the last day of my internship that turned into a month of freelancing at the Gap. I was in the Kids/Toddler Graphics department and towards the end, I primarily worked on toddler boys graphics. I worked on making typefaces, specifying the documents with color chips and sewing techniques. I learned a ton and was lucky to have the additional month there. I was starting to feel like an employee.
Everyone was super nice and I met so many talented people outside of my department of graphics. I was able to talk to the infant graphics team, as well as the CAD department. There is a possibililty that I might get some freelance work there, which would totally rock my socks. Another thing, the time at the Gap really has influenced me to pursue patterns and repeats. I loved looking at the pajama patterns and stripes and polka dots and words and alligators and trucks and flowers, blah blah blah. It just seems so fun. Anyways, I talked to a great fellow in the CAD department and he teaches a class on pattern making in a program called U4ia (euphoria) and I have been seriously thinking of taking it in the new year. I think it would open up a lot of possibilities with my work.
Also this week, I was working feverishly on a CD cover competition for From Jupiter. They are a band from Southern California. I totally thought it would be a long shot to win, but I worked til 2 am, slept for 3 hours, woke up at 5, and then finished it to get to work by 9:30. That day, I got a splendid text message and called them. They told me that mine had been picked. Woohoo! So, I am designing the interior of the booklet, which is totally different and fun from what I do on a regular basis. Sometimes, laying out type is such a breath of fresh air.
This summer, along with the gap, I have been working on a project that I haven't posted about because it has all been in the sketch phase, but I am wrapping up with it hopefully within the next week. I am doing some work for Fishs Eddy, a great company based out of New York. From the time I first learned of their store when I was a sophomore, I knew I someday would want to do some illustration work for them. Or at least dream of doing something. I can't really go into specifics, but I put up a sketchbook page just to give a slight tidbit. They are expected to be in stores in Spring of 2009. More info to follow!

This is going to be a long post because I want to share all the pictures that I can!
This past January, I worked for about 3-4 weeks in the
GapKids CAD department
doing prints for underwear & sleepwear.
It really was one of the best work experiences that I have had in my professional career so far. I was able to draw everyday and make prints that would make their way to stores for HOLIDAY 2009.
So Ta-Da! I checked today and they are starting to roll out in stores.
I'm tickled pink!
Toddler Boy/Baby Boy
penguin hockey--I did this print as a freelancer from home after I left Gap and started at 77Kids. I made a whole group of little icons of animals doing quirky winter sports. It was fun to make animals do these winter sport poses.
wintry animal group--This is also more of the prints that I did after I left Gap. It's too bad that they covered up my favorite print w/ the polarbear snowboarding. I think I might go buy these just to have a sample of my work.
penguin undie--This is the same winter sport idea as above pj set.
train undie--This one was a B* to make because it has so much detail. Took me a few days to get it done with all the windows and wheels. But I like the end result. Worth the work!
dino pj--I didn't create this print, I believe they bought it from a print house, but I helped clean up the print and prep it to be put into U4ia (software that puts prints into technical repeats). I loved the shapes and whimsy of these dinos!
dino slipper-- I just love the pjs, you gotta get the matching slippers!
Big Boys
husky boxer--Did some more 'serious'/'less cute ' prints for big boys. This print was fun because I had to make the dogs look as realistic as possible using flat shapes and keeping it down to as little colors as possible. Also difficult at the same time not to make them look flat.
motorcycle boxer--I believe I made the motorcycle and then they just made it into a repeat w/ just the one icon.
big boy penguin pj-- They used the same penguin from the wintry animal group that's from above; a penguin that was more 'serious' for the big boys pjs. Still cute I think!
Toddler Girl/Baby Girl
cupcake undie--This cupcake print was a lot of fun to make.
snowman undie---This print was bought by Gap from a design house, I just had to retrace the objects, flip them in a repeat and recolor. I like this one for girls because it's girly and NOT pink!

hot cocoa pj pant--I believe I did the shapes & Angela, the print stylist, did the type on the cups.
candy undie-- Kinda weird to me that they would put candy on girl's undie, I thought it would go on pajama bottoms...
cupcake & donut undie-- I did the top and the bottom prints.
hot cocoa undie--I did this art the first day I was there and still one of my favorites of my time there!
rockstar undie
donut boxers--I kinda forgot about this. I made the donuts on one of my last days there and then they made the repeat from those elements. Turned out cute!

Current Update:
-got a few more weeks, well, actually 3 to be exact, at the Gap in the graphics department (I can't wait to see the tshirts out next summer---you have got to go out and buy some)
-have a kinda big project on the horizon, but not sure i can fully disclose any definite information
-looking for a job/keeping my fingers crossed that I can freelance at the gap
-getting my home organized and furnished (more photos to come)
-just enjoying being out of school

Haven't Written in a While
Yes. That's right. I haven't written in a while because I haven't had internet at my new place (major bummer), have been working 9-6 at the Gap everyday, moved from one end of Manhattan to the opposite, was workin' on a freelance job (which I may post soon), and got the sad news on Saturday that my beloved grandpa passed away on Saturday evening. Needless to say, I haven't had the time, or the ability, and now my heart really isn't in the right place to make a 'regular' post.
While my grandpa wasn't doing better or getting any younger, the news still hit me hard. And I it still hasn't really hit me, I think I am in shock. His passing came one day before my grandparent's 63rd wedding anniversary, so it was bittersweet. He was the best. Tomorrow morning, I am leaving on a flight to Buffalo for the wake and funeral. I am bringing with me the drawing I did of him awhile ago in a nice wooden frame. I am framing one for me and one for him. Two in all. One will be mine and the other one will be with him. A limited edition of sorts. My grandma insists that we don't wear black at the funeral because my grandpa hated when us ladies wore black.
"Why wear black when there are so many other beautiful colors?" he once said. I agree. So I am going home after work and picking out the most colorful dress I own...xo Grandpa thanks for the memories.

Holy Sweet Jesus
This past half week has been quite an exciting, but also scary adventure.
First off, this happened today, so I am going to jump forward in time for this post, and share if first!
After a year of working a variety of jobs: retail, freelancing, and hostessing, I have finally landed a full time J-O-B! Quite exciting to share with y'all. I started three months ago at 77Kids, the new kids-brand shoot-off of American Eagle, doing kids graphics. It has really been a great three months, I really like the people, and the actual product it puts out.
Some graphics that are out now, made a year ago by Steve, Joe, Keith, and Micah.

The same time, I was also grappling with a stellar job offer, from my old boss, at Gap doing baby CAD design. It was a great job, but in the end I decided to go with the graphics job.
SO, this weekend, when I was thinking over the job prospects, I was invited by my old college friend to go out to her beach house in Long Island, near Oyster Bay. Let me tell you, it was the best thing that could have come along. So relaxing and soaked up a lot of vitamin D.

Gap Kids Graphics
The line of boys shirts that I worked on @ my internship last summer are out! Way cool. I did all the watercolor illos for this line of tshirts. One of the graphics guys did the typography.

For those of you wonderin' what I have planned after May 16th (aka graduation), I was offered an internship at Gap here in New York. I will be working on the Graphics on Kids and Toddler clothing. I am really excited for this 10 week program, which starts In early June. These are my favorite Graphic T's on the site now. And, what am I doing after that? Well, I am taking it one day at a time.
